Is there any better way to spend a summer day than by picnicking outside — eating en plein air? With Kansas City’s park system, there’s no shortage of places to picnic so the only tricky part is packing everything up to go. Below we’ve put together a list of everything you need for your picnic basket:
1. A BASKET AND A COOLER
The basket is for dry goods. Layer your supplies by placing heavier items (like wine bottles) on the bottom, and lighter items like trail mix, crackers, plates, forks, and napkins on top. In your cooler, skip the ice and instead lay down a bottom layer of chilled water bottles, topping them with cold items like fruit, dip, veggies, and meat.
They can be fancy made-to-picnic blankets or as simple as beach towels or old duvet covers, but you can’t picnic without a blanket. Make sure you have enough for everyone to sit on.
3. BUG SPRAY
From chiggers to mosquitoes, the bugs are still in full force. Don’t let them ruin your picnic — plan ahead and bring plenty of bug spray.
Or badminton racquets and birdies, a croquet set, ball and glove, bubbles, books, or sidewalk chalk — whatever your family’s preferred outside activity is. It wouldn’t be a picnic without it!
5. TRASH BAGS
Just in case your picnic isn’t near an official trash can, make sure you bring something to clean up, leaving your natural setting just as pretty as when you found it.
6. PICNICKING WITH THE KIDS? PACK A THEME
From a Teddy Bear Picnic — every stuffed bear receives an invite — to a picnic under a tent, your littles will have fun getting silly on your outdoor outing.
It really wouldn’t be a Kansas City picnic without the BBQ, would it?
